Chemotherapy for Oral Cancer Patients

Chemotherapy involves the use of powerful drugs to destroy cancer cells. In oral cancer treatment, chemotherapy is commonly used for advanced stages or when cancer has spread beyond the mouth.

Chemotherapy drugs may be administered intravenously or orally, depending on the treatment plan. These medications circulate throughout the body, targeting rapidly dividing cancer cells.

Chemotherapy is often combined with radiation therapy to enhance treatment effectiveness. This approach, known as chemoradiation, improves tumor control and survival rates in certain patients.

Side effects can include nausea, fatigue, hair loss, and increased risk of infection. Supportive medications and careful monitoring help manage these effects.

Although chemotherapy affects healthy cells as well, ongoing advancements have improved drug tolerability. Treatment schedules are tailored to each patient’s condition and overall health.

Chemotherapy remains an important option for managing complex and aggressive forms of oral cancer.
